TEK-Talk: How do we ensure sufficient clean water in times of drought?

This year, the Netherlands is experiencing an actual water shortage. This has major consequences for the drinking water supply, industry, nature and agriculture. How can we ensure that we will also produce enough clean water in the future? In the Aquaconnect research programme, new water purification technologies are being developed to deal with water shortages. Filtration techniques and electrodialysis must ensure that we will also have sufficient clean water in the future.

During TEKNOWLOGY 2022, Huub Rijnaarts of WaterNexus and AquaConnect talked about the new water treatment technologies in his TEK talk. Combining the technologies aims to turn wastewater and brackish groundwater into water of a new good quality. It is also necessary to design an infrastructure that connects providers and consumers of water and to develop regulations that support the reuse of water.
